A layman’s introduction to Web 3.0

A layman’s introduction to Web 3.0

  • How is Web 3.0 different from Web 1.0 and Web 2.0?
  • Why there was need of Web 3.0?
  • Web 3.0 and its relation with Blockchain
  • Characteristics of Web 3.0
  • Summary

1. What is Web 3.0?

Web 3.0 or 3rd generation of world wide web is an internet evolution that promotes openness, decentralization and more security to its users. Too many difficult terms? Don’t worry I’m going to go through them turn by turn, just stick to the end. Web 3.0 is shifting paradigm and it is based on different components that will alter our use of the internet by allowing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to provide us with more human like experiences from machines. Not only this but decentralization of data using Blockchain will allow users to have more control over their assets.

2. How is Web 3.0 different from Web 1.0 and Web 2.0?

Web 1.0 was launched in the 1900s and basically consisted of any single web page like a big Wikipedia page. It did not allow interactions and after 15 to 20 years, it was replaced by Web 2.0 in the early 2000s. Today we are living in the era of the Web 2.0 that allows users to interact with web pages and websites, allows social connectivity, and user generated content. Web 2.0 is a revolution in itself because it allowed social interaction and wide access over multiple devices with internet. There has been a massive growth in the virtual utility because of Web 2.0. A big example of how web 2.0 has surrounded our lives is we often find ads about the objects we are thinking and we wonder, how can we see exactly what we were thinking or searching about a few days ago? But this happens because we allow “cookies” on multiple websites when we visit them. These cookies are later sold to giants like Google and Facebook and they show us the ads exactly related to what we were thinking.

3. Why there was need of Web 3.0?

Web 2.0 was a vast improvement over Web 1.0 by allowing user interactions, social activity etc. But there still has been loopholes in the Web 2.0 that gave rise to the development of Web 3.0. This includes centralization, lack of data security, vulnerability towards advanced attacks, being disruptive towards slow growing industries, and offering less transparency. These shortcomings led to the rise of Web 3.0. Major security concerns and threats are being dealt using Web 3.0 technologies. It is also a decentralized technology so it has less intermediaries and offers more security and transparency

4. Web 3.0 and its relation with Blockchain

Blockchain is the core principle on which Web 3.0 operates. How? Blockchain itself is based on decentralization and allows different assets such as Non fungible tokens (NFTs) and other unique digital assets to be sold and traded between two parties directly without involvement of any intermediary party. Because of this decentralization, Web 3.0 will allow consumers to access and govern the internet and web themselves rather than through services mediated by companies like Google, Apple or Facebook

5. Characteristics of Web 3.0

Web 3.0 encompasses multiple features which are listed below

Summary

Congratulations! If you have read this article, then you are now the part of the community that is familiar with the new tech giant named Web 3.0. An existing example of Web 3.0 utilization is Siri. It is almost like talking to a human and interacting with it is very easy and humanlike. Soon with Web 3.0 implemented in several devices, it will leave us stunned with how much technology can do for us!
